In January 2022, the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai volcano in the Pacific Ocean erupted in one of the largest volcanic explosions recorded in modern history, generating a tsunami that affected coastlines thousands of kilometres away. The eruption was detected by weather satellites around the entire globe.
