The Hawaiian archipelago was entirely created by a single volcanic hotspot that the Pacific Plate has been moving over for millions of years, producing a chain of volcanic islands stretching 2,400 kilometres across the Pacific. The oldest and most eroded islands are at the north-west end of the chain.
