Pliny the Younger wrote two detailed letters describing the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 CE, making them the oldest eyewitness account of a volcanic eruption that still exists. He described the eruption cloud as looking like a giant umbrella pine tree — now known as a Plinian eruption column.
