In 2021, National Geographic officially recognised a fifth ocean — the Southern Ocean surrounding Antarctica — giving it the same status as the Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, and Arctic Oceans. It is defined by a powerful current called the Antarctic Circumpolar Current.
