Wolof is spoken by the vast majority of people in Senegal — about 80% of the population — even though it is not the official language (French holds that status, a legacy of colonialism). Wolof has borrowed many words from Arabic, French, and other languages and continues to evolve. The Wolof word 'dëkk' (city) is where the name Dakar, Senegal's capital, may originate.
