The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) is the largest and most comprehensive dictionary in the English language, currently containing over 600,000 words and meanings. Editors continuously add new words and trace the historical use of every word back to its earliest documented appearance. The first complete edition took 70 years to complete, with the first volunteers beginning to read and collect example quotations in 1857.
