During World War Two, the US military recruited hundreds of Native American speakers — particularly Navajo Code Talkers — to transmit secret military communications using their native languages as a code. The Navajo language was virtually unknown outside the Navajo people and was never deciphered by Japanese code-breakers. The Code Talkers played a crucial role in several major Pacific campaigns.
