Many of the world's indigenous languages are being lost as younger generations shift to dominant national languages for economic and social reasons. The last speaker of Ubykh, a language with the most consonant sounds of any language (84 consonants), died in 1992. Organizations like the Endangered Languages Project are working to document and preserve hundreds of endangered languages before their last speakers are gone.
