X-rays were discovered accidentally in 1895 by physicist Wilhelm Röntgen while experimenting with cathode ray tubes. He noticed that a fluorescent screen across the room glowed even when the tube was covered. He soon realized invisible rays were penetrating the covering and took the first ever X-ray image — of his wife's hand showing her bones. He won the first Nobel Prize in Physics in 1901.
