Smallpox, once one of the most deadly diseases in human history, killing up to 30% of those infected, was completely eradicated worldwide in 1980 thanks to a global vaccination campaign. It remains the only human infectious disease ever to be fully eradicated. The World Health Organization declared victory on May 8, 1980 — less than 200 years after Jenner invented the first vaccine.
