The principle of vaccination — deliberately exposing the immune system to a weakened form of a pathogen to build immunity — has been used to reduce or eradicate some of the world's deadliest diseases. In addition to smallpox, vaccinations have eliminated polio from most of the world and dramatically reduced deaths from measles, tetanus, diphtheria, and many other diseases. Vaccines are considered one of the greatest public health achievements in history.
