Touchscreen technology was invented in 1965 by E.A. Johnson at the Royal Radar Establishment in England, who developed a capacitive touchscreen for air traffic control systems. The first commercial touchscreen phone was IBM's Simon, released in 1994 — 13 years before the iPhone. The multi-touch technology used in modern smartphones was developed at CERN and the University of Delaware in the 1970s-1980s.
