Contrary to popular belief, Thomas Crapper did not invent the flush toilet — he was a plumber who popularized and improved upon existing designs. The first patented flush toilet was invented by Alexander Cummings in 1775. However, Crapper's name did become so associated with toilet plumbing that some historians believe it contributed to the informal English slang word for the toilet.
