Safety glass was accidentally discovered in 1903 by French chemist Édouard Bénédictus, who dropped a glass flask coated with a dried plastic film and noticed it shattered but held its shape rather than scattering sharp fragments. He remembered this years later when he read about injuries from automobile windshields and developed a commercial safety glass. It is now used in all car windshields.
