The world's first practical photographic process, the daguerreotype, was announced by Louis Daguerre in 1839. Early daguerreotypes required exposure times of up to 30 minutes in bright sunlight, making it impossible to photograph people — subjects had to remain completely still. Improvements quickly reduced exposure times to seconds, and photography rapidly became a cultural phenomenon.
