The modern paper clip design — the double-loop Gem clip — was patented in Britain in 1899 and became wildly popular as an alternative to pins, which could damage paper. During World War Two, Norwegians under Nazi occupation secretly wore paper clips on their lapels as a symbol of resistance and solidarity. The paper clip became a national symbol of Norwegian ingenuity.
