Nuclear power plants generate electricity using the heat from controlled nuclear fission — the splitting of uranium or plutonium atoms. The first full-scale nuclear power plant to generate electricity for public use opened in Obninsk, Soviet Union, in 1954. Today, nuclear power provides about 10% of the world's electricity and produces virtually no carbon emissions during operation.
