The emergency signal SOS (... --- ...) was adopted internationally in 1906 as a maritime distress signal. It was chosen not because it stands for 'Save Our Souls' or 'Save Our Ship' — those are popular backronyms invented afterward — but simply because it was the easiest, most distinctive pattern to send and recognize in Morse code. The Titanic was one of the first ships to use the SOS signal.
