Electric cars are not a modern invention — the first practical electric vehicle was built in Scotland in the 1880s, and by 1900, electric cars outsold gasoline vehicles in the United States. They fell out of favor when cheap oil and the electric starter made gasoline cars more practical. The modern electric vehicle revival is driven by advances in lithium-ion battery technology pioneered in the 1970s-1990s.
