Thomas Edison did not actually invent the light bulb from scratch — more than 20 inventors had created earlier versions. What Edison invented in 1879 was the first practical, long-lasting incandescent bulb using a carbonized cotton filament. He also developed the entire electric power distribution system needed to make electric lighting practical. When asked about his many failed attempts, he reportedly said each failure taught him something.
