Benjamin Franklin invented bifocal glasses around 1784 because he was tired of switching between two pairs of glasses — one for reading and one for seeing at a distance. He had the lenses from both pairs cut in half and combined into a single pair. Despite this and many other practical inventions, Franklin refused to patent any of his inventions, believing they should benefit all of humanity freely.
