Immune cells don't rely on the nervous system to coordinate their responses — they communicate with each other through a complex language of chemical signals called cytokines and chemokines. These signaling molecules can attract immune cells to a site of infection, activate them to fight pathogens, or tell them to stop fighting once an infection is cleared. Disruptions in these signals are involved in many inflammatory diseases.
