Napoleon Bonaparte was not actually short — he stood about 5 feet 7 inches tall, which was average for a French man in the 1800s. The myth of his small stature came partly from a British cartoon and a confusion over French and English measurement units. His nickname 'le petit caporal' referred to his closeness with his soldiers, not his size.
