Doctors who treated Black Death plague victims in medieval Europe wore a distinctive costume that included a long waxed coat, gloves, and a mask with a long beak filled with aromatic herbs. They believed the herbs would protect them from the 'bad air' that they thought caused the plague. While their theory was wrong, the mask did offer some protection against infected fleas.
