Six ginkgo trees near the center of the Hiroshima atomic bomb blast in 1945 survived the explosion and were among the first living things to recover in the devastated area. These ancient trees were given the name 'hibaku jumoku' — A-bombed trees. Today they are considered symbols of hope, survival, and peace.
