English doctor Edward Jenner created the world's first vaccine in 1796 when he noticed that milkmaids who caught cowpox seemed to be protected from the deadly disease smallpox. He tested his theory by infecting a boy with cowpox, then exposing him to smallpox — and the boy did not get sick. His discovery eventually led to the complete eradication of smallpox worldwide.
