Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin, the world's first antibiotic, by accident in 1928 when he noticed a mold contaminating his petri dish was killing bacteria. He initially ignored the finding, and it took over a decade before other scientists developed it into a usable medicine. Penicillin went on to save hundreds of millions of lives.
