The American Civil War (1861-1865) was the deadliest conflict in US history, killing an estimated 620,000 to 750,000 soldiers — more than American deaths in World War One and Two combined. Disease killed more soldiers than battlefield wounds in many campaigns. The war ultimately ended slavery and preserved the union of the United States.
